Bringing Broadband to Africa Via Satellite

“What caught our attention was a map with a bunch of red lines representing the fiber that runs around the world,” says Mike Fries, chief executive of Liberty Global, the broadband and cable company partly owned by media mogul John Malone. The map showed large areas, primarily in and around Africa, with little or no fiber. “It was a compelling illustration of what this network will fill,” says Mr. Fries, adding that Liberty’s Denver office will help develop the project”…. <More>

Intel Demos Wireless Electricity

“It’s just demoed what it’s calling “Wireless Resonant Energy Link” – a way of transmitting electricity to nearby devices sans any pesky wires. Read on to find out how.

The principle works in a similar fashion to the way an opera singer can transfer enough energy to shatter a glass purely by hitting the right note. It’s based on work done by Marin Soljacic at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology but, crucially, Intel’s managed to up the efficiency so that 90% of the power transmitted actually makes it to the receiving device”…. <More>

Realistic, Fast 3D Graphics For You Anywhere from The Cloud

“Imagine you could play video games – and immerse yourself in virtual worlds – with 3D graphics comparable to those found in blockbuster films like Transformers or WALL•E. And then imagine you could experience and control those graphics in real-time from any internet-enabled device, whether it be a desktop computer, set-top box or even iPhone.

Sound far-fetched? It doesn’t to Jules Urbach, founder and CEO of a Los Angeles-based company called OTOY, who has been working with microprocessor manufacturer AMD since 2006 to make the idea of server-side graphics processing a reality. If all goes as planned, 3D rendering will become just another computer task that jumps from the client to the cloud. Call it gaming as a service (GaaS) if you will. No more Xboxes, no more PlayStations, and no more souped-up PC towers. Just a monitor, some controls, and a way to receive and display frames generated by a powerful server farm”….<More>

Could TransferJet Wirelessly Replace Your USB Cables?

“Unlike Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and soon Ultra WideBand and Wireless USB, Sony’s TransferJet technology isn’t proposed as a disruptive transmission force: it uses electric induction to transmit data rather than the radiation field antennas used by 802.11 Wi-Fi kit.

This means that TransferJet won’t interfere with or be degraded by any surrounding radio signals “…. <More Via Tech Radar>
