“Toradex have begun sampling their latest COM Express module, just 84 x 55mm in size,
which uses Intel’s Z5xx Atom processor range. The Toradex Robin (shown here on the right, to scale – but not actual size – with its Toradex Woodpecker sibling, announced last year) has seven USB 2.0, gigabit ethernet, a microSD slot and a SATA connection, and is suitable for highly-compact embedded applications.

The Robin will be available with either the Atom 1.1GHz Z510 processor or the 1.6GHz Z530 processor, the former having a 400MHz FSB and 1GB of onboard storage and the latter with a 533MHz FSB, 2GB of storage and hyper-threading support. While the Z530 is the obvious choice for speed, the Z510 Robin fights back with its super-frugal power demands: just 3.5 to 5 Watts. Saying that, the Z530 Robin isn’t exactly a hog, using from 5.1 to 7.6 Watts.
Each comes with 512MB of soldered-on RAM and can support up to a 1366 x 768 external display over VGA. Other connections include one PCIe, ExpressCard, a TV output and HD audio. My experience of the the Palm OS is that it was satble but lacked any wow factor and now Palm claims they may have a game changer with their new Palm’s OS set to be unveiled on January’s CES called Nova led by Ex-Apple S enior Vice President for Hardware Engineering and “150 engineers since Rubinstein’s arrival. Among them are Jeff Devine, a top operations executive with Nokia (NOK), and Way Ting, an operating system guru from Silicon Graphics (SGIC). “We haven’t had any trouble selling our story,” says consultant Dan Walker, who was Apple’s chief talent officer from 2000 to 2004 and now leads recruiting for Palm”.

Now, the good stuff – and there’s a lot.
Running off a Qualcomm chipset with custom Brew operating system, the INQ1 has the best integration of social networking and communication tools this side of a BlackBerry or iPhone – scratch that, in many respects it is better than either.
For a start, Facebook, Skype, Twitter, YouTube, Bebo, eBay, Last FM, Microsoft Instant Messenger, Gmail, Google Maps are not only available on the handset but they run full time in the background, pre-fetching data and keeping users continuously connected. All run thin clients which can be accessed with or without signal (such as when on the Tube) and any notices written offline automatically sent when reception returns.
Taking this to the next level is a game changing contacts database where the INQ1’s contacts are seamlessly combined with those detected from these services. This means FaceBook, Twitter, Skype, Gmail, Yahoo, WLM contacts and more are merged grouping contacts with the same name or those with similar (ie, ‘Gordon Kelly’ and Gordon K’ would cause a prompt asking whether they should be merged or not). Consequently select any contact and you’ll have the option (where applicable) to either call, text, email, Facebook, IM, Twitter or Skype call (but not eBay) them, even their avatars and statuses are transposed. “The big question is – can WiMAX catch up w or replace Cellular adoption and maturity? Intel and Samsung would like to make it the big connect-anywhere feature for new UMPC’s, but I note that for instance Sprint just delayed its planned US rollout – so we have to wait and see.

The inevitable has come to pass. In the US, AT&T’s big rival, Verizon Wireless, has introduced what is for all intents and purposes is a copy of the iPhone.
