K3: The Power of the Sun and Wind now within your reach!

The K3 is ” a “tribrid” device since it can be charged by wind, sun or electricity from an AC wall outlet.
A fully charged K3 can charge a mobile phone over five times and an iPod/MP3 player over 10 times. Just one hour of sun and wind provides 30 minutes of talk time and over 300 minutes of MP3 music. However, performance figures may vary based on different mobile phone models and iPod/mp3 player models, as well as sunlight intensity and wind speed consistency’…The retail price of the K3 is $99.95 and the K3 will be available through the company’s online store at http://www.kinesisindustries.com/store

Toyota’s 3g Prius Has Solar Panels, Remote Control Air Conditioning

https://i2.wp.com/3.bp.blogspot.com/_mxVVX-SZq6c/SXyROl0ynQI/AAAAAAAABkI/TKrs4ifVsOw/s400/Toyota-Prius-3Gen-2.jpg

“The most energy-efficient Prius yet–50 mpg compared to 46 mpg for the 2009 model–comes with an optional solar panel on the roof to power cabin vent fans. Since the remote control-powered air conditioner is electric, it can run even when the car is off–so a quick trip to the store doesn’t have to mean an oven-like car upon return. Toyota’s new Prius also comes with LED headlights that save 17% of power used by high-intensity low-beam lights”….<More>

Prefab: Clayton i-house

“Low-E windows, solar augmentation, high-efficiency appliances and superior insulation. The solar panels on the roof don’t supply all the home’s needs, but they do cut electricity consumption in half. There’s also a tankless water heater and a cistern that collects rainwater from the roof for use in gardening, car washing or other outdoor uses. Floors are made of fast-growing bamboo, and paint and insulation are low- or zero-emission.Clayton hopes to deliver it for about $100,000″….<Via TinyHouseBlog>

Atom CPU on Credit Card sized Mainboard

“Toradex have begun sampling their latest COM Express module, just 84 x 55mm in size, toradex woodpecker robin atom module

which uses Intel’s Z5xx Atom processor range. The Toradex Robin (shown here on the right, to scale – but not actual size – with its Toradex Woodpecker sibling, announced last year) has seven USB 2.0, gigabit ethernet, a microSD slot and a SATA connection, and is suitable for highly-compact embedded applications.

Toradex Woodpecker Robin Atom Module

The Robin will be available with either the Atom 1.1GHz Z510 processor or the 1.6GHz Z530 processor, the former having a 400MHz FSB and 1GB of onboard storage and the latter with a 533MHz FSB, 2GB of storage and hyper-threading support. While the Z530 is the obvious choice for speed, the Z510 Robin fights back with its super-frugal power demands: just 3.5 to 5 Watts. Saying that, the Z530 Robin isn’t exactly a hog, using from 5.1 to 7.6 Watts.

Each comes with 512MB of soldered-on RAM and can support up to a 1366 x 768 external display over VGA. Other connections include one PCIe, ExpressCard, a TV output and HD audio. These look like incredible boards offering plenty of DIY scope; they’re priced at €129 ($163) for the Z510 Robin and €179 ($227) for the Z530 Robin”…. <More>

Solar Powered Robotic Lawn Mower

“utomower Solar Hybrid is the world’s first fully automatic lawn mower that is partly powered by the sun. Brilliant for your lawn, great for your conscience, better for the planet. The product uses considerably less energy than any conventional mower. That’s because in addition to a charging station, it comes with a large integrated solar panel. When there is daylight available, the solar cells enable the mower to extend its cutting periods before it needs recharging”….

Prefab: The Floating House

“Locating the house on a remote island posed another set of constraints. Using traditional construction processes would have been prohibitively expensive; the majority of costs would have been applied toward transporting building materials to the remote island. Instead, we worked with the contractor to devise a prefabrication and construction process that maximized the use of thee unique character of the site:Lake Huron as a waterway”…. <More>

Palm’s New Mobile OS Nova= Something Huge?

My experience of the the Palm OS is that it was satble but lacked any wow factor and now Palm claims they may have a game changer with their new Palm’s OS set to be unveiled on January’s CES called Nova led by Ex-Apple  S enior Vice President for Hardware Engineering and “150 engineers since Rubinstein’s arrival. Among them are Jeff Devine, a top operations executive with Nokia (NOK), and Way Ting, an operating system guru from Silicon Graphics (SGIC). “We haven’t had any trouble selling our story,” says consultant Dan Walker, who was Apple’s chief talent officer from 2000 to 2004 and now leads recruiting for Palm”.

” Palm insiders are optimistic. “I’m fundamentally convinced we’re onto something huge,” says Mike Bell, a 16-year Apple engineering star who joined Palm last year. “Some of the stuff we’re working on here is mind-blowing—better than anything I’ve seen before”…. <More>

Good for You, Good for the Planet

Power Button, image credit Paul Randall via Flickr, under Creative Commons-licensed content.

“Good for You, Good for the Planet’s Jorge Alonso Garcia says that nearly “100%” of electronic devices remain on standby mode after they’ve been turned off. “This is so that they can be quickly turned on again,” he explains.
So What Does the Device Do?

100%Off, the device designed by Good for You, is a microprocessor which uses algorithms to detect a decline in the flow of electricity being sent to an electronic device or appliance. Once 100%Off has detected a decline, it completely shuts the device or appliance off. (The amount of time 100% off waits before a complete shutdown of the device is configurable through programming.)”….<More>

New High-Speed Internet Society with Satellites

JAXA | Overview of the “KIZUNA” (WINDS)

iMAGE VIA PMForum

iMAGE VIA PMForum

“The “KIZUNA” is a communications satellite that enables super high-speed data communications of up to 1.2 Gbps to develop a society without any information availability disparity, in which everybody can equally enjoy high-speed communications wherever they live.

Using an antenna for South East Asian countries, we are aiming to achieve super high-speed communications with nations in the Asia/Pacific region with which Japan has close ties.
The KIZUNA (WINDS) does not require costly ground equipment. If you install a small antenna (about 45 cm in diameter) at your house, you can receive data at up to 155Mbps and transmit data at up to 6 Mbps. With a larger antenna of about 5 meters in diameter, super high-speed data communications of up to 1.2 Gbps will be available. (Such a service is mainly for organizations and companies.) Therefore, even in some areas where major ground infrastructure for the Internet is difficult to establish, people can enjoy the same level of Internet service as that in urban areas”

Thinner Than Paper OLED

“If you thought OLEDs were thin already, researchers at the Universal Display Corporation (whose factory we visited last year) have made a flexible display that’s positively anorexic. The ultra-thin metal foil screen is less than 50 micrometers thin, which means it’s even thinner than a sheet of A4 paper. The UDC folks also claimed that their new invention exceeds the industrial target of 1,000 hours and the lifetime of conventionally sealed glass packaged OLEDs”…. <More>

GreenByDesign had an interesting post on a company called PostGreen who is attempting to build a house for $100,000 called the 100K house it is a little on the small side and not strictly a prefab. Also, the 100k budget covers “the hard construction budget only. The price of the land and all soft costs are separate” which sorta defeats the purpose
